    At three Banyan Tree resorts in Mexico, every villa has its own pool. That leaves one question for the two of you: which setting? Banyan Tree Mayakoba sits among lagoons and mangroves on the Caribbean coast of the Riviera Maya. Banyan Tree Cabo Marqués rests on cliffs above the Pacific in Acapulco. Banyan Tree Veya Valle de Guadalupe spreads across the vineyard hills of Baja California. Each one suits a different kind of trip for two, and at Steph’s Treks, we plan all three. Here is how to choose.

    Banyan Tree Mayakoba, Riviera Maya

    Banyan Tree Mayakoba offers 159 private villas and suites, each with a private pool and generous outdoor living space. The resort sits inside the gated Mayakoba community, where canal waterways link mangroves, freshwater lagoons and a Caribbean beach. The drive is about 45 minutes from Cancún International Airport and 20 minutes from downtown Playa del Carmen. The resort lists Two Michelin Keys, AAA Five Diamond and Forbes Four-Star recognition.

    For the two of you

    • A villa over the lagoon. The Serenity Pool Villa with Living Room offers 300 square meters, a king bed, a full-sized private pool overlooking the lagoon and a hammock on the terrace. For golden-hour views, the two-storey Lagoon & Sunset Rooftop Pool Villa is set over the water, steps from the beach.
    • Dinner and spa for two. Saffron brings signature Thai dining, and the Banyan Tree Spa offers holistic treatments. The wellness program rotates through Duo Yoga, Sunrise Yoga and SUP stretching, all in natural settings.
    • Time on the water. Kayaking on the beach, the EcoTour, the nature trail and paddleboarding are complimentary. Golf at El Camaleón, snorkeling and cooking classes are available at an additional cost.

    Good to know

    Mayakoba also welcomes families, with a Rangers Club for children ages 5 to 12, so it works well for a trip that blends time as a couple with time as a group. The resort names November to April as the best weather window in the Riviera Maya, with cooler temperatures and lower humidity.

    Banyan Tree Cabo Marqués, Acapulco

    Banyan Tree Cabo Marqués has 45 private pool villas on the cliff tops of Acapulco’s Diamond Zone, high above the Pacific. The resort has recently been renovated and lists 1 MICHELIN Key 2025, Michelin Key 2026 and Forbes Travel Guide Four-Star recognition. Each villa blends Thai influences with Mexican design, and the setting is made for sunsets.

    Villas built for couples

    The Hillside Pool Villa King and the Oceanfront Pool Villa King are both described by the resort as ideal for couples. Each has a king bed and a private heated infinity pool, and the oceanfront villa adds an expansive cliffside sundeck. The Wellbeing Sanctuary Pool Villa King is designed for renewal, with private practice spaces and a heated infinity pool overlooking the bay.

    • Dining with a view. Saffron serves Thai cuisine with ocean views, Cello brings Italian flavors, and Las Vistas Bar & Lounge frames cocktails with sunsets. For something more private, the resort offers an in-villa barbecue with a dedicated chef and candlelit dinners on your terrace.
    • Spa rituals for two. Couples’ spa rituals include massages and floating therapies at the Banyan Tree Spa.
    • Out and about. The resort suggests an evening at La Quebrada to watch Acapulco’s famous cliff divers.

    Good to know

    Because the resort sits on a clifftop, there is no beach on property. The team can recommend beach clubs about 20 minutes away, and the Reflections Infinity Pool is the shared pool. The resort is about a 20-minute drive from Acapulco’s international airport. Families are welcome here as well, though the resort describes itself as primarily designed for couples and tranquil getaways.

    Banyan Tree Veya Valle de Guadalupe, Baja Wine Country

    Opened in 2024, Banyan Tree Veya Valle de Guadalupe is a collection of 30 private pool villas on 16 acres in the hills near Ensenada, designed by Mexican architect Michel Rojkind. It is about 90 minutes from the US border and reached by car from San Diego or Tijuana, so a wine-country escape can fit a long weekend.

    Wine and wellbeing for two

    • The villas. The Harmony Sunrise and Harmony Sunset Pool Villas each offer 125 square meters, a private plunge pool, a terrace with valley views, a fireplace and a curated wine bar.
    • The winery. Pictograma, at the heart of the resort, is a winery dedicated exclusively to Grenache, with tastings and tours of red, white, rosé and sparkling expressions.
    • The table. Amapola, led by chefs Benito Molina and Solange Muris, serves an evolving six-step tasting menu and was recognized by the Michelin Guide Mexico 2026. The resort offers seven dining experiences in all.
    • The ritual. Banyan Tree Veya Spa, a traditional Temazcal and an ethnobotanical garden anchor the wellbeing program. Banyan Tree Connections, designed for couples, brings together wellbeing consultations, yoga, sound healing, hydrotherapy and mindful hikes.

    The resort is on the MICHELIN Guide Hotel Selection 2026. For a quieter pace, its team notes that winter brings fireside moments, spa rituals and peaceful hillside stays.

    A safari is the trip couples talk about for decades. It is the honeymoon that beats any beach, the anniversary that marks a milestone, the bucket-list journey you finally say yes to. The good news for 2026 and beyond: Africa now has more intimate, beautifully designed camps than ever, and many of the newest sit far from the traffic jams around a single lion. At Steph’s Treks, we plan safaris for two around one idea above all others: the wilderness should feel like yours.

    Kenya: The Mara, and How to Avoid the Crowds

    The Masai Mara is famous for a reason. Big cats are plentiful, and the Great Migration usually moves through from roughly July into October. That same fame means busy sightings in peak season, especially in the main reserve. Three Marriott properties now give couples very different ways to experience Kenya.

    • JW Marriott Masai Mara Lodge. Opened in 2023 inside the Masai Mara National Reserve, it marked JW Marriott’s first step into luxury safari and puts you close to the reserve’s classic game drives.
    • The Ritz-Carlton, Masai Mara Safari Camp. Opened in August 2025 on the Sand River near the Tanzania border, with 20 tented suites, each with its own plunge pool. Its far southern location is a quieter corner of the reserve and a front-row seat when the herds are near.
    • JW Marriott Mount Kenya Rhino Reserve Safari Camp. Opened in July 2026 in the Solio Game Reserve, between Mount Kenya and the Aberdare Mountains. Solio is known for its rhino conservation and is home to both black and white rhinos. The camp has 19 tented suites with plunge pools and a Spa by JW, and it pairs beautifully with a Mara stay for a two-region trip.

    Our Tip: Look at the Conservancies

    Bordering the main reserve are private conservancies such as Mara North, Olare Motorogi and Naboisho. These areas are leased from Maasai landowners, limit the number of beds, and cap how many vehicles may gather at a sighting. They also allow experiences the main reserve generally does not, including guided bush walks and night drives. Many couples love a split stay: a few nights in a conservancy for privacy, plus a stay near the river crossings in the reserve if the migration is the dream. We plan the combination, the flights between camps, and the timing.

    Tanzania: Auberge Safari and the Quiet South

    In May 2026, Auberge Collection introduced Auberge Safari, bringing nine Tanzania camps and lodges from Legendary Expeditions and Chem Chem Safari under one name. The collection spans the Serengeti, the private Mwiba area, the Lake Manyara landscape and the Burunge Wildlife Management Area near Tarangire. Two highlights for crowd-shy couples: Mwiba, a private protected wildlife area away from the main Serengeti routes, and the Chem Chem camps in the Tarangire area, known for a slower, unhurried style of safari. Mwiba Plains is being rebuilt as a permanent year-round camp, scheduled to reopen in December 2026.

    For true seclusion, look south. Ubuyu, a Banyan Tree Escape opened in August 2026 on the Great Ruaha River in Ruaha National Park, far from the northern circuit. It is Banyan Tree’s first safari retreat, with just six villas, each with its own plunge pool, its own vehicle and a dedicated Escape Host. Ruaha’s dry season, roughly June to October, draws wildlife to the river. From December to March, the park turns green and lush, with rich birdlife and even fewer visitors.

    Zambia: Anantara Kafue and a River of Your Own

    Kafue National Park is one of Africa’s largest protected areas, yet it sees a fraction of the visitors of East Africa’s headline parks. In 2026, Anantara opened Anantara Tented Camp Kafue River, its first safari camp, with just 13 suites and villas on a private concession along a seven-kilometer stretch of the Kafue River. The camp works alongside African Parks and the Government of Zambia on the park’s restoration. For couples, the signature is the Horizon Terrace Suites, raised high above the ground and reached by a glass elevator, with a star bed on the upper deck for a night under the open sky. Days mix game drives, river safaris, guided walks and bush picnics, and the Pool and Bush Villas each have a heated plunge pool and an indoor massage room.

    Mozambique: Aman Karingani, One to Watch

    Aman is bringing its first safari retreat in Africa to the Karingani Game Reserve in southern Mozambique, a vast private reserve of about 150,000 hectares that borders South Africa’s Kruger National Park. Plans call for just 30 one- and two-bedroom pavilions, each with a covered deck and private pool, around a central lodge with an Aman Spa. Opening is expected in 2028.     Practical Tips for a Safari for Two

    • Choose privacy by design. Small camps, private conservancies and a private vehicle make a bigger difference than any single amenity. A private vehicle lets you linger at a sighting as long as you like.
    • Combine regions. Pair a famous park with a quieter one: the Mara with Solio, the Serengeti with Mwiba or Tarangire, or East Africa’s classics with Ruaha or Kafue.
    • Consider the green season. In parks like Ruaha and Kafue, the months of roughly December to March bring lush scenery, migratory birds and fewer vehicles.
    • Book early for peak months. The smallest camps have only a handful of suites, and migration season fills first.
    • Fly between camps. Light aircraft transfers turn long drives into short hops and give you more time in the bush.
